Mostly just to show how 'hardcore' the Greywardens are.The reason given in game is that the Warden's initiation ritual is actually a secret, and it's unlikely that they would get many people willing to join if they knew that there is a good chance of dying just by joining. There is also some symbolism thrown in there. Daveth was too willing to sacrifice everything for his cause, meaning he's too close to the enemy already. Jory was too afraid to take the steps necessary to even start fighting the Blight so he was technically 'dead already'. Well as Aedan seeing Jory killed makes me want to tell the secret much more.I disagree with dead already otherwise that means that any of their soldiers would be willing to drink the blood.Okay lets just assume that Jory was 'dead already' meaning he would be useless in battle, that still allows him to act as a sentry, gate operator, haul supplies and conduct repairs. If your going to kill someone for not following through with it then you may as well forget the whole story thing and just consript people. The idea is that Daveth and Jory represent the two extremes of looking at the problem. The first being too willing to sacrifice everything, the second not being willing to make sacrfices. The result of both paths is failure and death, these two characters are supposed to be symbols of either path. That being said, I don't think it's even possible to fail in this game so the two characters are ultimately pointless, and, as I said first, thier deaths serve only to show how 'burtal' and 'hardcore' this game is supposed to be.This game was Bioware's first attempt at dark fantasy.

It comes off as thier normal fantasy fare (heroic fantasy) with a few out of place moments that exist solely to make the game seem dark. More so in awakening.who is blabbing thier mouth.

They have the right of conscription. You can join willingly of course but they can force the issue if needed.
You as the player can even refuse to join during your Origin story, in which case you will simply be conscripted. From the wiki: Should they need to, the Grey Wardens possess the Right of Conscription; they may demand that any individual from king to criminal be drafted into their ranks. However — especially in Ferelden — this right is used sparingly for fear of political reprisal. If Jory had refused to join from the start Duncan may well have just moved on and found another.
Once he willingly accepted and it got to the point of learning about the ritual however, there was no backing out. Originally posted by:If you say 'I can't believe you killed Ser Jorey' Duncan responds by telling you his fate was decided the moment he pulled his weapon. Perhaps there was an alternative course if he couldn't/wouldn't partake in the blood.
We won't ever know because any other options were gone once he decided to fight.ill have to watch that again. I could of swore jorey had his hand on his weapon but didnt pull it till duncan pulled his out. I have had plenty of fellow soldiers who went to iraq reguardless if they had wife and kids. The way the mlitary sees it?
It was your choice to have a wife and kid.now go clear out that house!Jory wanted the prestiage of being called a grey warden but didnt want to sacrifice anything to obtain the prestiage. That isn't what happened at all.He showed he was perfectly willing to die just by going to get the blood in the first place.
What actually happened was that they then told him 'oh by the way, we are going to hollow out your immortal soul and feed it to the demon we're sticking in you.' Or at least that was what he was hearing. Mind, a thing perfectly believable in the setting. But really.
The scene was just poorly done. The PC just going blankly along with the whole thing with no interaction from the player kind of kills the mood they seemed to be going for, and in the end it mostly just paints the Wardens as too dumb / ♥♥♥-holeish to come up with any of a long list of ways to stop recruits from bringing weapons to the initiation ritual. It's a secretive order that by law can pull members from any walk of life it wants. Just tall them that coming in you birthday suit signifies letting go of past affiliations and loyalties. That taking up arms afterwards signifies starting your duties. That they must be given a 'welcome to the club' sword in the ceremony. Literally anything. But no. Instead we get a guy who acts like he has ether never done this before, or was just looking for an excuse to kill one of them.
