In Illustrator simply want to place a vector leaf shape inside a simple vector circle and then make that into one shape with a hollow center so a background can show through it, for some reason it just isn't working and the two shapes don't do anything with the pathfinder options. I've seen a person put a seperate vector image over another and have it work like a mask, showing the background through the object below it which would also work, but a trick like that I could never figure out. Any help here would be appreciated, thanks.
AllThingsId Sombrero Hole Punch EURO Sometimes called a Euro Punch or Sombrero Hole Punch, this slot punch makes a retail hang hole to display merchandise on hanger displays. Cuts ¼” from the edge of a display card.
I'll add my two cents.first off, all replies thus far. Correct and should work.i also employ the following method for doing what you describe. The circle on the bottom, the leaf on the top. This way the circle will stay solid and leave a leaf shaped hole in the circle. Select both items and under 'object' choose 'compound path make'the pitfall that always get me if it doesn't work is to make sure that only two individual items (nothing grouped) are selected.
Many times i have a duplicate directly on top of one and therefore i select three items instead of two. Thanks for all the feedback so far guys, I'm impressed with the quick response. I've tried and tested all these methods with a circle and square and it worked, but I do it with the leaf and anything else and it won't work. I think it has something to do with the leaf.

Hole Punch Ideas
Normally when you click on a vector object you get a color box and a stroke box at the top of the screen, but when I select the leaf I just get an odd symbol where those are normally found, I don't know what it means.(This is what happens when you have to work with existing files from previous designers before you instead of making your own that will work to begin with but can't because your boss wants everything done at breakneck speed.). HiI guess you are right the object leaf and the background object must be compound paths for the pathfinder to work. Have a look at the Layer properties of the object whether it has some strange grouping or anything else that looks odd.You could try to apply an outline stroke (Object = Path = Outline stroke). If that option is available, it may work if not there is definitely something 'wrong' with your object.Otherwise feel free to post the design for us to have a look at.Ultimately it depends on the co mplexitity of the leaf but you may be better off retracing it. At least then you know what you are dealing with for sure.hthcapt.
